Pressure to oust Vanuatu's Minister for Internal Affairs

11:01 am on 16 April 2007

Opponents of Vanuatu's Minister for Internal Affairs, George Wells, have issued an unsigned press statement using a Vanuaaku Pati letterhead saying the Vanuaaku Pati Executive has endorsed the party's disciplinary committee recommendation to suspend him from the party for breaching the leadership code.

The press statement claimed Mr Wells be removed from his ministerial portfolio and suspended from the Vanuaaku Pati to wait for the VP national congress which will be held soon this year to decide his fate.

The Daily Post says his opponents used differences in his personal life with his wife as the basis to attack him, but Mr Wells said he has no time to waste on individuals who spend valuable time gossipping about his personal life.

Mr Wells said the President of VP, Edward Natapei, had called him and assured him the party executive has no power to suspend him from the party saying only the party congress has the power to suspend him.

Mr Wells said Mr Natapei also assured him he would meet the Prime Minister to advise him not to remove him from his portfolio.

Removing Mr Wells could force an early dissolution of parliament.
