American Samoans celebrate Flag Day

7:52 am on 18 April 2007

American Samoa's Governor, Togiola Tulafono, has called on the territory's people "to participate wholeheartedly in this years" Flag Day celebration marking the 107 years since American Samoa became a U.S. territory.

The first U.S. flag was raised on the main island of Tutuila on April 17, 1900 establishing the Islands of Tutuila and Aunu'u as America Samoa.

Four years later, the three islands of the Manu'a Island group became part of American Samoa.

This year's two-day celebration that opens today, pays tribute to the youth of American Samoa and Togiola will deliver his Flag Day address today, followed by a parade.

All five public high schools in the territory are participating in the traditional dance and singing categories.

And for the first time, a dance troupe from Tokelau is performing in the Flag Day celebration.

A 40-member delegation from Atafu atoll arrived yesterday morning.
