US and Fiji interim administration to meet today over security barriers

10:20 am on 18 April 2007

An official at the United States Embassy in Suva says there will be discussions today on the interim government's demand that the mission remove barriers from the street in front of the embassy.

The barriers have been in place in Loftus Street as an additional security measure since the September 11 attacks in 2001 but last week the interim government demanded they be removed.

The interim prime minister, commodore Frank Bainimara, says the barriers are denying taxpayers access to the road.

The embassy has made no public comment on the demand but has asked for dialogue and this is to occur this afternoon.
