Papuan workers at the Freeport gold and copper mine in Indonesia's Papua province have walked off the job demanding a better deal for Papuan workers and the traditional landowners of the mine.
Sources in Timika say between 3,000 and 4,000 employees joined the walkout.
Freeport has about 9,000 employees in Indonesia - about a third of them Papuan.
Representatives of Tongoi Papua, an organisation established to negotiate between Papuans and the company, are holding talks with Freeport over workers demands for a wage increase and assurances that Papuan landowners will be given a greater share of the benefits from the mine.
