9:20 am on 24 April 2007

The United Nations fact finding team currently visiting Fiji has described its talks with the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama, as fruitful.

The team leader, Jehangir Khan, told Fiji TV after the meeting yesterday that they had very good discussions with the interim prime minister and will continue talks with all relevant stakeholders.

The UN team also met with Suva-based diplomats yesterday.

They will not meet with the deposed prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, but will have a telephone conference with him this morning and later hear from members of the deposed government and the SDL party.

The team will also hear the views of other political parties, trade unions, civil society and other stakeholders.

The UN team will leave Fiji on Friday and present its report and recommendations to the UN secretary general, Ban Ki Moon, who will decide on the next course of action.
