New Zealand fighters have had a winning start to the Oceania Boxing champs in Samoa, winning all three of their opening bouts.

Canterbury lightwelter Carl Commons had a points win over Iosefa Tanu of American Samoa.

New Zealand's number two welterweight Justin Potter of Auckland had to survive a knockdown soon after the opening bell to overcome Tosky Setem of Papua New Guinea.

But Kahukura Bentson took less than a round to win his middleweight bout with Vengi Hagi of the Cook Islands, with the referee stopping the fight.
