May Day passive protest in Fiji called a success by organisers - a flop by government

Organisers say an informal strike today by Fiji workers to protest against last year's military takeover has been a success.

Authorities say the action was a flop, but there are reports they are trying to find out how many civil servants took time off work after various weblogs urged workers to stay home.

The action was aimed at making a peaceful May Day protest against the military coup, which occurred on December 5 last year.

A blogger named Fijian Black made several calls for people to stay home.

He says people need to be more proactive in defending the democracy, rights and the future of Fiji.
