Fiji's president, Ratu Josefa Iloilo, has been suspended as a member of the Great Council of Chiefs.
The Fiji Times Online reports that the permanent secretary to the President's Office, Rupeni Nacewa, has confirmed that Ratu Josefa has received a letter similar to the ones sent to other members of the Great Council who were suspended last month.
Mr Nacewa points out that Ratu Josefa was a member of the Great Council of Chiefs for Vuda even before taking up the office of head of state.
He says the suspension letter was signed by the interim minister for Fijian affairs, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, and the president accepted the decision.
The Great Council of Chiefs was suspended last month and its membership is under review after the chiefs rejected President Iloilo's nomination of Ratu Epeli Nailatikau for the vice presidency.
