Fiji interim PM says GCC suspension was his choice

4:16 pm on 3 May 2007

Fiji's interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama says he made the decision to suspend members of the Great Council of Chiefs.

Commodore Bainimarama told fijilive.com that it is unfair for members of the GCC to single out the interim Fijian Affairs Minister Ratu Epeli Ganilau for the review of membership of the GCC.

Two senior members of the GCC filed papers in court yesterday seeking a judicial review on the legality of Ratu Epeli's decision to suspend the council last month.

Commodore Bainimarama explains that the suspension is the result of the GCC being too concerned with the legality of the interim Government.

He said they can argue on the legality of the government until the cows come home.

Commodore Bainiamarama says it's a waste of public resources to provide any funding to the GCC if they don't recognise the interim government.
