Fiji branch of Transparency International says travel bans hurting progress to democracy

Transparency International Fiji has accused Australia, New Zealand and the United States of hypocrisy in their professed intention to promote good governance in Fiji.

Transparency's Fiji chairman, Hari Pal Singh, says this is because these countries are hindering the institutions that promote good governance in Fiji.

Fiji TV says Mr Singh was referring to the reluctance of professional people to join the new independent Public Accounts Committee to scrutinise the auditor general's reports on state finances because they would face travel bans.

Mr Singh says Australia, New Zealand and the United States should relax the threat of travel bans because if the institutions which fight corruption cannot function, Fiji will be in deeper trouble.

He says these countries must divorce politics from good governance.

Mr Singh says no one likes coups but one should not let that damage the institutions that promote good governance.
