Cooks chamber of commerce for public works privatisation

The Cook Islands Chamber of Commerce says it would like to see the Ministry of Works hand over its road repairs and maintenance services to the private sector.

The Ministry of Works is under review with one of the aims being to look at whether parts of the ministry should be privatised.

The President of the Chamber of Commerce, Teresa Manarangi Trott, says road marking and road construction are both areas that are likely to be undertaken by the private sector, as they have in the past.

"They are items that you would have repairs and maintenance, which wouldn't occur 24 hours, 7 days a week. They would actually happen over a period of time. And we would think that by offering this to the private sector perhaps it would be cheaper than employing somebody full time to undertake these services."

Mrs Manarangi Trott says the benefits of privatising anything must be that the services are going to be more efficiently delivered and offered at a cheaper rate than what is being offered by government.
