New regional office for US State Department to be established in Fiji

A new regional office for the US State Department will be established in Suva, Fiji to oversee U.S public diplomacy activities throughout the Pacific Islands.

Fijilive reports that this was revealed at the 8th Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders currently underway in Washington DC and the office will introduce a broad array of press, culture and education programs to the region.

The State Department is also increasing educational exchanges in the South Pacific and will continue the South Pacific Program that sends 5 students annually from selected Pacific countries to the U.S for undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The conference is held for the first time in Washington DC marking a milestone, as the United States has named this year the "Year of the Pacific".

Fiji is represented by Minister for Public Service, Poseci Bune and the PS in the Prime Minister's office, Pramesh Chand.
