The French Polynesian opposition leader, Oscar Temaru, has announced that he will be a candidate in the French assembly election next month.
Mr Temaru, who is the leader of the pro-indepenedence Tavini Huitaraatira Party and who was the territory's President twice in the past three years, made the announcement a day before the nomination period closes.
The Union For Democracy, which is led by Mr Temaru, nominated Pierre Frebault for the other of the two seats available to French Polynesia.
Mr Temaru says the good result last weekend of the French Socialist presidential candidate, Segolene Royal, in the west of Tahiti shows that his party can win a seat in the French assembly.
So far 12 politicians have been nominated for the two seats.
Both are currently held by members of the ruling Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party.
