Solomons and Taiwan expect to sign labour deal

3:19 pm on 11 May 2007

An agreement, which is likely to see hundreds of Solomon Islanders engaged to work in Taiwan - will be signed next week in Taipei by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.

Mr Sogavare told the Solomon Star paper that the Memorandum of Understanding will pave the way for Solomon Islanders to work in Taiwan.

It's not clear when the new labour cooperation will come into force, but a Taipei official told the Solomon Star that workers are needed immediately in manufacturing, construction and other areas as well.

Taiwan recruits 400,000 foreign workers a year.

The Solomon Star says it understands that unlike the seasonal workers scheme of New Zealand, the labour cooperation agreement with Taiwan will see Solomon Islanders contracted for up to two years.
