Samoa police investigating possible mail robbery

8:57 am on 17 May 2007

An overseas mail-bag containing personal letters with money is alleged to have been burnt at Faleolo International airport in Samoa without the mail-bag being delivered to the government's main post office.

The police are looking into the matter after a man found a letter sent from his daughter serving a church mission in the United States was amongst a number of letters burnt in the airport rubbish last Sunday.

The man has told SBCTV that an airport worker who knows his family had spotted his daughter's letter addressed to him and his wife before it was burnt in the fire.

The man says that the airport employee told him some of the mail, which had been opened, had contained sums of money

There is a strong suspicion that robbery was the reason for the removal and destruction of the mail-bag
