Fiji's interim minister for labour says the government is still open for talks with public sector unions that threaten strike action because of a five percent pay cut.
In its budget, the interim administration announced the pay cuts for all public servants and a reduced retirement age to 55.
The unions say they won't accept this and are planning a meeting next week to set a date for their strike.
But the interim labour minister, Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau, says she hopes good sense will prevail.
"Through dialogue and mediation we hope that we will come to some kind of solution that would be a win win situation for both, government and the employees. Whatever transpires from here we hope we will be somehow deferred to a later date when our economy is back on its feet again."
Bernadette Round-Ganilau says hospitality and tourism employees had to accept a fifty percent pay cut.
