Dates for Pacific Islands Forum confirmed for Tonga

6:10 pm on 23 May 2007

The Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, has confirmed that the 38th Pacific Islands Forum will be held in Tonga's capital Nuku'alofa on October the 16th and 17th.

All the meetings will be held in Nuku'alofa on the main island Tongatapu, except for the Leaders' Retreat, which will be held in Vava'u in the northern group .

There will be a summit of the Smaller Islands States before the Forum as there will be the Pacific ACP Leaders' Summit.

Tonga abandoned its hosting rights last year to Fiji because the king was ill.

China is contributing to organisation of the Forum by building a conference venue and supplying vehicles.

Tonga is now ruled under a state of emergency.
