Public sector strike looming again in Fiji

10:01 am on 24 May 2007

Fiji' Largest public sector trade union is reported to be getting closer to strike action again.

Fiji TV says this follows the permanent arbitrator William Callanchini's outright rejection of a further interpretation of the Partnership Agreement signed between the Fiji Public Service Association and the deposed SDL government.

The decision has left the association's claim to 38-million US dollars in Cost of Living Adjustment payments for the years 2005 to 2007 in tatters.

Mr Callanchini says because the Partnership Agreement was an out-of-court settlement between the association and the government of the day, he has no powers to make a ruling on it and no choice but to reject the association's application.

Meanwhile, the Public Service Commission has confirmed that it has received a directive from the interim cabinet to withdraw from the Partnership Agreement with the unions.
