US call rates to American Samoa drop

1:35 pm on 25 May 2007

Effective tomorrow, calling American Samoa from the United States and its territories will be considered a domestic call and therefore the rates will be lower.

The Samoa News says this is a result of an order last year by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission requiring that all U.S. long distance carriers provide services in each state including territories at rates no higher than the rates they charged to their subscribers in any other state or territory.

Our correspondent in Pago Pago says people in the US may be made aware that their long-distance calls to American Samoa should be charged the domestic rate of that state when calling from the US mainland to American Samoa.
