Limited effect of strike in French Polynesia

1:31 pm on 25 May 2007

A general strike in French Polynesia has had a limited impact so far but there are concerns that it may affect the port soon.

A union umbrella group has been taking the action since midnight as part of its pay claims.

The strike call has been made by employees at the airport as well but the facility is operating normally.

According to the Tahitipresse news agency, a hotel in Tahiti has had its access blocked, forcing guests to walk to catch transport.

The hotel management has deplored the strike, saying such action damages the island's image as a tourist destination.
