New Caledonia's vice-president warns that women's issues should not be ignored just because women are better represented at a government level.
Delegates from around the Pacific are attending the 10th Triennial Conference of Pacific Women in New Caledonia this week, to discuss ways for Pacific nations to take action with gender equality.
New Caledonia's vice-president and Minister for Culture, Women's Affairs and Citizenship, Dewe Gorodey, says the gender parity law in force in New Caledonia has allowed women to be politically represented.
But she says this is not an immediate fix for women's issues.
"In the society, there is still problem like violence, so this political law must not hide the real problems that the women continue to live. We have to continue to make actions against the social situation of the women, against violence, against a lack of education."
Dewe Gorodey says governments around the Pacific need to make a political commitment to addressing women's issues as part of their national policy.
