Fiji's AG accuses NZ lawyer of insulting Fiji

4:03 pm on 29 May 2007

Fiji's interim attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says a New Zealand lawyer, Janet Mason, is spreading false rumours about the country, its people and the lawyers practising in Fiji.

This comes after Ms Mason spoke about her recent experience in Fiji where her husband was assaulted during a night time robbery of her home.

She said lawyers in Fiji live in fear that they might be detained and abused by the military.

Two of her colleagues spent two days in each in detention over the weekend.

On their release, one of them said he was free to come and go as he pleased.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says Ms Mason's comments are doing a disservice and insult Fiji, its people and the lawyers practicing in Fiji.
