American Samoa gets tough with individuals and businesses

9:18 am on 30 May 2007

American Samoa's Treasury is getting tougher with individuals and businesses who owe money, as collections from excise taxes on imports have dropped.

Sources in the Tax Office say that some members of cabinet who have not filed taxes on their government salaries are getting letters from tax collectors to either pay up or they will be taken to court.

The same tough treatment is being given to local companies whose services are contracted by government.

Treasury has been withholding checks due them to offset their unpaid taxes.

According to one government official some of the businesses have not filed taxes for years yet have been receiving thousands of dollars from the American Samoa government.
