The French anti-globalisation crusader, Jose Bove, has travelled to New Caledonia to campaign for Kanaks contesting the French assembly election.

Mr Bove said on arrival that it was essential that the process of New Caledonia's accession to independence takes form.

He says in the territory, there is a battle going on for the independence of the Kanak people, which he described as a social battle.

Mr Bove, who was one the 12 French presidential candidates this year, also called for New Caledonia's nickel reserves to be nationalised.
