Fiji's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, says Fiji will not hold general elections just for the sake of meeting the demands of the international community.
The Fiji Times Online says Commodore Bainimarama was responding to Australia's refusal to downgrade its travel advisory following the lifting of the Public Emergency Regulations last week.
The foreign minister, Alexander Downer, said Australia would not change its attitude until Fiji puts in place a serious plan for a return to democracy within two years.
Commodore Bainimarama says the interim administration is taking one step at a time, given the circumstances and enormous tasks ahead of it.
He says while his administration is committed to meeting the various undertakings given in good faith, Fiji will not hold general elections just for the sake of meeting the demands of the international community.
Commodore Bainimarama says it would be good if Mr Downer got off his high horse and started working with Fiji, rather than making demands.
He says Mr Downer has failed miserably in formulating Australia's foreign policy towards the Pacific and he cannot allow Fiji to be added to Mr Downer's statistics.
