Twenty wild dolphins captured in Solomons

A Solomon Islands television station says the capture of 20 wild dolphins has sparked fears among environmental groups that the government will overturn a ban on dolphin exports.

The dolphins were captured by local fishermen for a dolphin park at Gavutu run by Canadian Chris Porter.

In July 2004, Porter's company exported 28 bottlenose dolphins to an aquatic park in Mexico, stirring international outrage and prompting the Australian and New Zealand governments to urge the Solomons to ban live dolphin exports.

The island nation's tuna industry also pushed for a ban amid fears dolphin exports would tarnish their industry and trigger an international boycott of Solomons tuna.
