Vanuatu police view Vila court fire as suspicious

7:03 pm on 7 June 2007

Police in Vanuatu have not ruled out that the fire that destroyed the Supreme court building in the capital, Port Vila, was suspicious.

The fire is believed to have started just after midnight and engulfed the entire structure.

The wooden building was about 100 years old and dates back to the early days of the French-English condominium of the New Hebrides.

Police have launched an investigation into fire but have declined to identify any group or individuals as potential suspects.
