Samoa government wants police to sort out accusations of rape against deputy commissioner

Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, says the government is still relying on the police professional unit to investigate two allegations of attempted rape.

Two women officers have made allegations against one of the assistant commissioners and concerns were raised that the Commissioner, Papali'i Lorenese Neru, was attempting to stop the investigation.

But in a statement, Papali'i said he has neither stopped the investigation, nor sought to influence its outcome.

He has described the reports as fundamentally incorrect.

The Prime Minister says a Commission of Inquiry could be the other option if the government was unhappy with the process of the police investigation.

However, Tuila'epa says he would prefer the matter to be dealt with according to police regulations.
