New Caledonia's Goro Nickel builds pipeline around around activists' base

New Caledonia's Goro Nickel company says opposition from a local group and environmental reasons are behind its plan to build an alternative waste pipeline.

Rheebu Nuu is building a fence on a piece of land where the company's waste pipeline should have gone through.

Goro Nickel's spokesperson, Catherine Guillaume, says it has now decided to redirect the pipeline for two reasons.

"The first one is that Rheebu Nuu did not agree with the route, the second thing is that after many studies it appeared that this section was risky, technically speaking. Even if the new option is longer in terms of kilometres of the pipe, it is a better solution in terms of environmental protection."

Catherine Guillaume says the pipeline will now be about nine kilometres longer and it won't go through a protected forest and marine area.
