Samoa's Malietoa title goes to late head of state's son

The Malietoa paramount title in Samoa has been bestowed upon Fa'amausili Moli, the son of the late Head of State, Malietoa Tanumafili II.

A bestowal ceremony went ahead at Malie village this morning despite objections and interim injunctions by several claimants to the title from the heirs of Malietoa Natuitasina and Malietoa Talavou.

Our correspondent in Samoa, Autagavaia Tipi Autagavaia, says these two branches had not been included in discussions that they contend are needed to determine who should be given the title.

"They are going to challenge it in court because there is a court decision on the Malietoa title back in 1939 which said very clearly that after the late Malietoa the three branches of the family should come together and discuss a new successor."
