Fiji NGO says expulsion of New Zealand diplomat a serious mistake

Fiji's NGO Coalition on Human Rights says the interim regime's decision to expel the New Zealand High Commissioner, Michael Green, is a serious mistake.

Fiji's interim government has ordered Mr Green to leave by Monday after claiming he has interfered in the country's domestic affairs.

The NGOCHR chair, Virisila Buadromo, says it is very concerned about the diplomatic row and fears Fiji will lose much needed assistance.

"The NGO coalition thinks that this is a serious mistake that the interim administration has made in expelling the New Zealand high commissioner, Michael Green. We feel at this time that we need the support of our neighbours, such as New Zealand and Australia towards our speedy return to parliamentary democracy."

Virisila Buadromo says she is concerned that the ordinary Fiji citizens will suffer from the consequences of this rift.

Ms Buadromo says the coalition hopes both sides will start a dialogue to solve the diplomatic impasse.
