Penalities imposed on 24 Guadalcanal leaders in Solomon Islands

10:33 am on 20 June 2007

The Solomon Islands Code Commission has fined 16 Guadalcanal Provincial Assembly Members and eight Councillors of the Honiara City Council.

The Commission imposed the 13 US dollar fines on each of the leaders for failing to declare their financial statements to the Commission as required under the Leadership Code Act following national or provincial elections.

The leaders were warned not to take the requirement to submit financial statements lightly as it is a statutory obligation placed on leaders by law.

Commission Secretary Decima Regatule says the Leadership Code Commission sent the forms to elected members with instructions but many leaders chose to ignore it.

Ms Regatule says the Commission no longer gives reminders to leaders who fail to submit the declarations to the Commission on time.

Meanwhile, the 24 members have been given seven days to sumbit their financial status and business interests or be charged for misconduct in office.
