Australia rejects suggestions that is trying to wreck Fiji economy

3:36 pm on 22 June 2007

Australia's Foreign Minister has rejected claims by Fiji's Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry that Australia and New Zealand are trying to destroy his country's economy.

Mr Chaudhry says the two countries are trying to block aid assistance and loans from international banks and other countries to Fiji.

He says Australia and New Zealand have also been undermining Fiji's economy through unjustified, negative travel advisories.

But Australia's foreign minister Alexander Downer says there is no basis to the claim that Australia is trying to block aid assistance and loans from international banks and other countries to Fiji.

He says Australia is maintaining aid to Fiji in areas such as health, education, the garment industry and community development.

Mr Downer says all aid will be restored when people like Mr Chaudhry embrace democracy.
