A two-day conference starting in Vanuatu's capital Port Vila on Monday will bring together 30 experts in a wide range of areas for the first full conference of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Business in Society.
The conference theme Communities and Sustainable Development has been organised jointly by the founder of APABIS Professor Juliet Roper at the Waikato Management School, and the University of the South Pacific.
She says with the Pacific region now becoming an attractive holiday destination for visitors from Asia and North America the pressure increases on protecting the cultures and environments.
Professor Roper says business who want to set up in the Pacific must learn that it is a two way process and communities are very important.
"Make them involved they're key stakeholders not just as customers but they give them their right to be if you like so if you want to have a community to be on side with your business you have to learn to how work with them
Professor Juliet Roper from Waikato University.
