The Cook Islands new police commissioner says he is impressed with the amount of community support for the police in the Cook Islands.

Pat Tasker, who takes over from Pira Wichman, has served in the New Zealand police force for 20 years and his last posting was commander for the Eastern Bay of Plenty.

Last year a comprehensive review of policing in the Cook Islands was carried out after a request received from the Cook Islands Government.

The review team made a number of recommendations to improve the Cook Islands police service.

Mr Tasker says some of those issues raised will be addressed immediately.

"To bring the correct officers through with the correct skills, public satisfaction, raising the public satisfaction levels and there was a number of other matters, traffic concerns and concerns over juvenile offending."

The Commissioner says everyone he has met is keen to see the police succeed.
