The International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN says any export of wild dolphins violates the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species.

The body, which regulates trade in dolphins has denounced the possible plans by the Solomon Islands government to allow the export of the animals to other countries.

Last week the government backed a possible trade of live dolphins, although a decision is yet to be made by cabinet.

Pacnews reports that the IUCN's stand against the Solomon Islands government is because there have been no studies on the status of local dolphin populations in the country.
