6:30 pm on 27 June 2007

The Solomon Islands Government is looking at engaging foreign nationals for a commission of inquiry into land dealings and abandoned lands on Guadalcanal prior to the ethnic crisis in 1998.

The interim chairman of the committee looking at the formation and terms of reference for the inquiry, Sam Alasia, says they are working towards the end of August to have it set up.

Mr Alasia says no locals will be members of the inquiry team since Government want all the commissioners to be completely independent.

He says bearing that in mind Government will be looking for Forum Island countries to provide the personnel.

Mr Alasia says they are also seeking submissions from the public as to what they want the commission to delve into.
