US funds Pacific territories to cope with possible mass casualties

U.S. Pacific territories and freely associated states have been awarded more than 2.1 million US dollars in federal grants to strengthen their hospitals and other health care facilities to respond to bioterror attacks, infectious diseases and natural disasters that may cause mass casualties.

Awards for the territories and states are included in a 430-million US dollar package announced last week.

The award distribution list includes 457,000 dollars for Guam and 387,000 for the Federated States of Micronesia while the Northern Marianas Islands are set to receive 346,000 and American Samoa 323,000.

The Marshall Islands are to get 321,000 dollars and Palau 275,000.
