NGO activist in Fiji told not to travel

The Young Women's Christian Association in Fiji says it is disappointed at the military's decision to stop one of its members, Tupou Vere, from traveling overseas to attend a conference.

The YWCA's vice president, Luse Tamani, says the military's action is another attempt to weaken the resolve and efforts of women activists who have been pressing for the early restoration of democracy and human rights.

Ms Vere was to attend the World YWCA Council meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, from today.

Ms Tamani says the ban would thwart the efforts of Pacific island women from conveying their experiences to a global forum of women.

The director of immigration, Commander Viliame Naupoto, says he is not aware of any ban on Ms Vere but may receive a report today.
