NEC gives direction to split PNG Telikom

Papua New Guinea's Independent Public Business Corporation has been given eight weeks to submit a plan to the National Executive Council or NEC to split Telikom PNG Limited into two separate companies.

The Post Courier newspaper reports Telikom will be split into NetCo and ServCo businesses, which would both be State owned enterprises with separate boards and management.

The NEC also wanted to know how soon the ICCC would issue two public mobile telephony carrier licences on terms which were consistent with the amended government policy, after it rescinded its 2005 decision to issue licences to Digicel and Green Communications.

The move has deferred any mobile phone competition in the country for at least a year.
