Fiji unions deplore lack of dialogue as strikes loom

3:29 pm on 4 July 2007

Fiji unions have expressed their dismay at the interim government's attitude towards their requests to revisit its decisions and they say this will lead to strike action within weeks.

The Confederation of Public Sector Unions has been trying to stave off a five-percent pay cuts and a lowering of the retirement age to 55.

The Confederation says responses from the Cabinet to the unions have been lacking or negative and it says it would appear that the authorities wish to force the issue.

It says by seeking to deny workers' rights or declaring unilateral decisions as non-negotiable, the Public Service Commission and the interim government appear to be shutting the door on any possible resolution or progress on the disputes.

Unions have given a 30-day strike notice after months of ballotting and discussions.
