Fiji looking further abroad for judges for superior courts

Fiji is looking at appointing judges from Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, India and other Commonwealth countries to hear cases as a result of deteriorating relations with New Zealand and Australia.

This follows a cabinet decision this week to amend the High Court Act.

The interim attorney general, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, says the amendments would allow the appointment of judges of the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court from countries other than just New Zealand and Australia.

Other countries from which judges may be appointed currently are Canada, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Tonga and Britain.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says there are other countries from which highly qualified and competent judges can be appointed.

As well, he says given the increase in the judicial workload of the High Court, this week's amendment would also allow for an increase in the prescribed number of judges from 15 to 18.
