The Central Magistrates Court in Solomon Islands has sentenced a former Prime Minister and a former premier of Guadalcanal province, Ezekiel Alebua, to three and a half years in prison.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation says Alebua was convicted and sentenced on two counts of embezzlement.

The offences were committed when he was the Guadalcanal premier between February and May 2001.

The court heard that Alebua had used more than 27,000 US dollars of Guadalcanal provincial government funds for personal gain.
