The director of the Fiji Human rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, is tipped to be the country's next Ombudsman.

The Fijilive news website says Dr Shameem's appointed is expected to be formally announced by the Constitutional Offices Commission later this week.

Fiji's Ombudsman is also the chair of the Human Rights Commission by virtue of office.

The chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission, Rishi Ram, had earlier confirmed that the candidate recommended by the Commission would be a local person with a legal background.

He said the appointment would be finalised after the candidate had been considered and approved by the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama.

Dr Shameem has declined to comment on the reports.
