PNG polling extended until Tuesday

The Papua New Guinea national election has been extended to Tuesday of next week to allow for people in remote areas to cast votes.

The spokesman for the Electoral Commission, Mark Karambi, says voting has been completed in most areas but the extensive rain since the election began a week and a half ago has put some polling teams three to four days behind schedule.

He says there is no likelihood of a further extension.

"Polling in most parts of the country is completed. Only a few places that have been seriously affected by weather [officials] are now in respective polling venues now and are actually conducting polling, so there is no possibility that it will be extended again."

Mr Karambi says counting is underway in four provinces and the rest should begin the process by Saturday.
