Fiji has been warned that it's living beyond its means and has an unhealthy economy.

The Fiji Times reports that the warning has come from the chairman of the Association of Banks, Laurie Melsop, who says the situation has forced banks to put up storm shutters.

Speaking at the Fiji Media Council Forum last night on the theme "Financial Survival", Mr Melsop says people need to seriously review their spending habits.

Mr Melsop has called on people not to increase their borrowing unless they have to.
