American Samoa Legislature to vet former Speaker's new appointment

The American Samoa Legislature is to review the appointment of former House Speaker, Matagi Mailo McMoore as director of the Department of Port Administration.

If approved by the Fono, Matagi will replace former director Tuitele T. Tuitele, who resigned last week to take up his new post of Senator for Fofo County.

Matagi currently serves as an executive assistant to the governor.

He was appointed two months ago to serve as a member of the Immigration Board, and it's not clear whether he will resign from the board if he is confirmed as Port director.

Governor Togiola Tulafono nominated Matagi to the director's post on Monday saying that the military veteran is highly qualified to head the Port Administration.

Matagi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1997 and served as Speaker from 2001 to 2006.

He lost his bid for re-election in 2006.
