Fiji appoints human rights official as Ombudsman

7:03 pm on 16 July 2007

The director of the Fiji Human Rights Commission, Dr Shaista Shameem, has been appointed the country's new Ombudsman.

The appointment has been announced by the Constitutional Offices Commission whose chairman, Rishi Ram, says it was endorsed by the interim prime minister, Commodore Bainimarama.

Mr Ram says Dr Shameem was selected from six people who were interviewed.

Dr Shameem will have to resign from the Human Rights Commission to take up the Ombudsman's post because in that position she will automatically become the chair of the Human Rights Commission by virtue of her office.
