Big Marshall Islands drug haul marijuana not cocaine

Marshall Islands police have confiscated more than 30 kilogrammes of

marijuana that washed up in a boat on a remote outer atoll earlier this

month.

The drug haul has an estimated street value of over 200 thousand US dollars.

Reports from Ailinglaplap Atoll had initially indicated the drugs discovered were cocaine.

But after the national police patrol vessel was dispatched to the atoll, police confirmed that it was large bails of marijuana, not cocaine.

The police say the boat in which the marijuana was found, is remarkably similar to one used by a trio of Mexicans who were rescued by a Marshall Islands fishing vessel last September after nine months drifting across the Pacific from Mexico.

That rescue sparked international media attention and speculation that the group was involved in drug-running, a charge they emphatically denied.
