The wireless internet company Unfired Fiji, is to launch a new service offering savings of up to 90-percent on international phone calls.

The company will use the well tried technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP but will offer carrier grade voice quality.

The Fiji Times reports that the product, called Unwired Voice, will be marketed through major retailers.

Unwired Fiji's chief executive, John Pollock says after 100 years of monopoly by fixed line providers, Fiji now has choice and serious savings in telecommunications costs.

Unwired's broadband service is currently available only in major urban centres.

The new technology has been licensed by the ministry of telecommunications and the regulatory authorities.
